The hour of a trip you did not plan

The part of a trip people describe later is rarely the thing they booked first. It is an hour that was not on the list: a wrong turning that became a street, a cafe you entered because it was raining, a conversation you did not schedule. You cannot book that hour. You can leave room for it.

Do not fill the day

If every hour has a ticket, the unplanned hour has nowhere to sit. Leave a gap between the thing you came for and the next obligation. Protect it the way you protect a train. When something interesting appears, you are allowed to follow it and drop the smaller plan. The museum will forgive you. The hour will not come back on the same afternoon.

Notice it while it is happening

You do not have to post it. You do have to stay in it. Put the phone away for that coffee, that bench, that extra stop on the bus. The experience people mean when they say the trip changed them is usually attention, not distance. A planned highlight can be wonderful and still feel like a task. An unplanned hour feels like yours because you chose it in the moment.

Afterwards

Write down the street or the place name the same day, or you will remember a feeling and lose the fact. That is the whole record you need. The rest of the itinerary is in your email. The hour is not.
